CNN web editor to speak as part of R-TV Professional-in-Residence series

JONESBORO-Doug Criss, a copy editor for CNN.com, will speak to students, Wednesday and Thursday, March 7-8, as part of the Arkansas State University Radio-Television Professional-in-Residence Speaker Series. All events are held in the College of Communications Building.

JONESBORO—Doug Criss, a copy editor for CNN.com, will speak to students, Wednesday and Thursday, March 7-8, as part of the Arkansas State University Radio-Television Professional-in-Residence Speaker Series. All events are held in the College of Communications Building.

Criss will speak to several classes beginning at 2 p.m. on March 7 and again beginning at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. They include Communications Research (Room 153 at 2 p.m.), Radio-Television Advertising and Sales (Room 137 at 2:30 p.m.), Multimedia Storytelling (155B at 3 p.m.) on Wednesday.

The Thursday schedule includes Electronic Media Management (Room 233 at 9:30 a.m.), Mass Communications in Modern Society (Room 233 at 11 a.m.), Introduction to Internet and Audio Production.

A 1993 ASU graduate with a bachelor of science degree in radio-television broadcasting, Criss edits stories, blogs, and maintains the homepage for CNN.com, the world's leading news website. He works out of CNN's world headquarters in Atlanta, Ga. Criss' responsibilities also includes updating CNN's main Twitter account and sending breaking news e-mails and alerts to the CNN website and mobile devices.

Since joining CNN in 2010, Criss has played a vital role in CNN.com's coverage of many stories, including the Haitian earthquake, the gulf oil spill, the Chilean miners rescue, the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, the Arab Spring protests, the Occupy movement, the fight over the debt ceiling and the killing of Osama bin Laden. Criss won a Peabody Award as part of CNN's team coverage of the 2010 gulf oil spill.

The Peabody Awards recognize distinguished public service by radio and television stations, networks, and producers.

Before coming to CNN, Criss served as the copy desk chief for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He has had reporting and editing stints at newspapers in Arkansas, Illinois, Texas and South Carolina. His broadcasting experience includes work for KAIT-TV and ASU-TV, and he worked as a board operator at KASU-FM.

Criss is a native of Stuttgart, Ark., and graduated from Stuttgart High School in 1988.
