Jazz Bands to Present ‘Spontaneous Composition’ Concert
JONESBORO – The Department of Music and A-State Jazz Studies will present “Spontaneous Composition,” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, in Fowler Center’s Riceland Hall at Arkansas State University.
The evening will feature performances by the two large ensembles, A-State Jazz Lab, directed by Michael Medrick, and the premier ensemble, A-State Jazz Orchestra, directed by Dr. Ken Carroll, as well as a small jazz combo group.
A-State Lab Band will open the program with “Saturday Night in Little Havana” by Dr. Tom O’Connor, professor emeritus. Next up is “Cedar’s Blues” by Cedar Walton, arranged by Medrick. The Lab Band set will conclude with “Star of the East” by Chris Ott.
The 7 p.m. Combo will present two tunes, “Coral Keys” by Walter Bishop, arranged by Medrick, and “All Over Again” by Roy Hargrove.
After a brief stage change, the Jazz Orchestra takes the stage with “Safe at Home” by Matt Catingub. Then comes “Always and Forever” by Pat Metheny/arr. Curnow, featuring Cody Daughertee on flugelhorn. The evening will wrap up with “Whipple’s Retaliation,” by Allen Carter.
