PHI ALPHA THETA

Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) is an academic honors society whose mission is to promote the study and craft of history. It was first established by Profesor Nels Cleven of the University of Arkansas in 1921. Since then, chapters have spread to campuses across the country.

Eta-Chi, A-State's PAT chapter, was founded in 1960 by Professor Durwood Cooper and a handful of determined students. At that time, Arkansas State University was Arkansas State College. Today, our chapter presents educational lectures, workshops, and professional opportunities to students. PAT members can apply to several scholarships, and PAT conferences are hosted annually, allowing aspiring historians to present their research to peers and professional historians. Awards are provided to top presenters. PAT also provides the leadership for the broader Arkansas State University History Club. All Eta-Chi members also gain membership to the History Club.

In order to be initiated, you must have at least twelve hours of history course credit with a 3.1 GPA or higher in your history coursework and an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.

HISTORY CLUB

The History Club, established in 2020, welcomes all A-State students passionate about history. It allows students who do not meet the requirements of Phi Alpha Theta membership to participate in Department of History events and to access the Wunderkammer history lounge, club quarters, and collections.
