Clinical Experiences

Clinical experiences are a vital component of Arkansas State University's Educator Preparation Program. These experiences provide candidates with progressive opportunities to observe, participate in, and ultimately lead instruction in authentic P–12 classroom settings under the guidance of experienced educators.

Our clinical experience sequence is intentionally designed to help candidates develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to become effective educators. Candidates advance through three levels of clinical practice, each building upon the previous experience.

Preparing Future Educators

Arkansas State University's clinical experiences are built upon strong partnerships with school districts and experienced mentor teachers across the region. Through these partnerships, candidates receive meaningful, hands-on experiences that connect coursework with classroom practice while developing the confidence and competence necessary to positively impact student learning.

From the first classroom observation through the completion of Residency II, our clinical experiences prepare future educators to enter the profession ready to lead, teach, and inspire.

Field 1: Introductory Clinical Experience

Field I is the first clinical experience completed during the Introduction to Education course. This experience provides candidates with an opportunity to explore the teaching profession through structured classroom observations.

During Field I, candidates:

  • Observe effective instructional practices in P–12 classrooms.
  • Become familiar with classroom management techniques and learning environments.
  • Connect educational theory to classroom practice.
  • Reflect on the roles and responsibilities of professional educators.
  • Begin developing a professional identity as future teachers.

Field I serves as the foundation for future clinical experiences and allows candidates to confirm their interest in the teaching profession while gaining valuable insight into today's classrooms.

Residency I

Residency I is the first semester of the year-long teacher residency experience. During this semester, residents transition from observation to active participation in classroom instruction while working alongside an Experienced Mentor Teacher (EMT).

Residents gradually assume increased instructional responsibilities as they:

  • Build relationships with students, families, and school personnel.
  • Assist with classroom instruction and management.
  • Plan and deliver lessons with mentor support.
  • Receive coaching and feedback from their Experienced Mentor Teacher and University Supervisor.
  • Develop professional competencies aligned with the Arkansas Educator Preparation Program requirements.

Residency I emphasizes guided practice, professional growth, and reflective teaching as residents prepare for full-time classroom responsibilities.


Residency II

Residency II is the culminating clinical experience within the Educator Preparation Program. During this full-time residency, candidates assume primary responsibility for classroom instruction while continuing to receive support from their Experienced Mentor Teacher and University Supervisor.

Residents are expected to:

  • Plan, implement, and assess effective instruction.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in classroom management.
  • Use student assessment data to inform instructional decisions.
  • Collaborate professionally with school personnel and families.
  • Exhibit the knowledge, skills, and dispositions expected of beginning educators.

Residency II provides candidates with an authentic teaching experience that prepares them for successful entry into the profession and recommendation for Arkansas teacher licensure.
